Chapter Three

The next day

“LaGuardia, please.” After a long day of meetings, I hopped in the cab. I loved my job, but what I really wanted now was a clean set of clothes and the rest of my stuff.

“You got it,” the driver mumbled as he pulled out onto the crowded street.

I had spent the entire evening last night obsessing over the sexy bartender. His eyes filled my dreams as I struggled to sleep. And his voice kept ringing in my ears throughout the day. It was asinine—a quick encounter I’d allowed to occupy way too much of my time. This overwhelming feeling pissed me off. The fact that I allowed a strange man to inhabit my thoughts brought on guilt. I was a married woman. Maybe not a happily married one, but married nonetheless. The ringing of my phone pulled me into the present and I didn’t need to look to know who it was. I let out a loud sigh before hitting the green button.

“Hello,” I said quietly.

“Hey, what are you doing?” he asked, nicer than usual.

“I’m on my way to the airport to get my luggage. What about you?”

“Nothing.”

“There’s a huge backup, ma’am. I’m going to take a different route,” the cab driver griped as he threw his hands in the air at the construction worker on the sidewalk.

“Okay,” I mumbled.

“Who was that?” Ryan’s pleasant tone disappeared in the blink of an eye.

“The cab driver,” I whispered into the receiver.

“Who’s with you?”

“No one,” I tried to assure him. But then my phone started to ring, displaying my husband was now trying to FaceTime me. This was so typical. I accepted it and tried to fake a smile, burying my disgust at his behavior.

“Hey.” My tone illustrated my irritation.

“Hey,” he grunted, squinting his eyes.

“I’m alone, Ryan.” I turned my phone and pointed it to the rest of the backseat.

“I didn’t say anything. Why are you acting like that?” he fumed.

“Okay.” I shook my head, needing this to end before it escalated.

“What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you trying to start a fight?” he accused. As I glanced at my cell, my eyes drifted to the corner of the screen. He was in our bedroom, and I noticed something in the background. I tried not to make my focus so obvious.

“Nothing, sorry. Long day,” I mumbled, staring at the hot pink shoes in the corner. I recognized those high heels, not because they were mine, but because I had bought them at a sample sale the last time I was in New York. I bought them for Tracy last year. And now they were sitting on my bedroom floor. My hands started to shake, and I knew I had to end this call right now. I had to compose myself.

“Listen, I’m pulling up to the airport right now, I’ll call you back in a little bit.” I tried my best to keep my voice calm, although I wasn’t sure why.

“Okay, call me later. Love you,” he replied, giving in fast and way too easily.
